Michele “Mickey” L Burns

Michele “Mickey” L Burns, 82 of Edwardsville, IL died on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.

 She was born August 11, 1942 in Champaign, IL, the daughter of the late Leroy and Catherine Anders.  She married James J. Burns on July 1, 1967 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Urbana, IL. 

 Before moving to the Edwardsville area, Michele worked for the city of Urbana as a meter maid. She took immense pride in her role as a homemaker, raising six children who were her greatest joy. After her children grew up, she continued to serve her community as a bus monitor in the Edwardsville school district, ensuring the safety and well-being of countless students.

 A talented baker and cook, Michele loved preparing meals and treats for her family and friends, often gathering them together to share in her home cooked meals and legendary sugar cookies. Her warm, inviting spirit drew people to her, and she had a unique ability to make friends wherever she went. In her later years, she found joy in the thrill of playing slots, often surrounded by new friends.  She never met a stranger and touched the lives of many with her outgoing personality.

 She is survived by her four sons:  Andy Burns of Edwardsville, Morris (Erin) Burns of Edwardsville, Nathan (Sarah) Burns of Maryville, and Ryan Burns of Edwardsville; two daughters, Annette (Ryan) Benham of St. Jacob, and Renea (Scott) Koenig of Pleasant View, TN; 10 grandchildren Haley, Megan, Hayden, Breanne, Kaden, Colin, Bradlee, Noah, Barrett, and Kora.

 Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Thursday, October 24 at Saksa Mateer Funeral Home, 210 N. Kansas St., Edwardsville IL 62025.

 Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis MO  63125.
